About the Nether Portal Calculator

This calculator is an essential tool for any Minecraft player looking to master fast travel. Because every block traveled in the Nether is equivalent to eight blocks in the Overworld, creating a network of linked portals is the key to exploring your world efficiently. This tool does the math for you, ensuring your portals link up perfectly every time.

Formula Explained

The relationship between the Overworld and the Nether is a simple 8-to-1 ratio for the X and Z coordinates. The Y-coordinate is not affected.

Nether Coordinate = Overworld Coordinate / 8

For example, if your base in the Overworld is at X=800, Z=1600, your corresponding Nether coordinates would be X=100, Z=200. Building a portal at these Nether coordinates will link it directly to your base.

How to Create Perfect Portal Links

To avoid portals linking to the wrong destination, follow these steps:

1️⃣

Note Your Overworld Coordinates

Build your first portal and write down the X and Z coordinates before you enter it.

2️⃣

Calculate Your Nether Coordinates

Use this calculator to divide your X and Z coordinates by 8.

3️⃣

Travel to the Location in the Nether

Navigate to the calculated X and Z coordinates inside the Nether. Be careful, as you may need to dig or build bridges.

4️⃣

Build Your Second Portal

Construct and light your new portal at the precise coordinates. It should now link perfectly back to your first portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Nether portals work in Minecraft?

Nether portals link the Overworld and the Nether dimensions. Travel in the Nether is 8 times faster than in the Overworld, meaning for every one block you travel in the Nether, you travel eight blocks in the Overworld. This makes Nether portals essential for fast travel across your world.

How do you link Nether portals correctly?

To link portals perfectly, you need to divide your Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8. Then, travel to those new coordinates in the Nether and build your second portal there. When you go through it, it should link back to your original Overworld portal. Our calculator does this math for you instantly.

Why did my Nether portal link to the wrong place?

This usually happens if there is another active portal nearby. When you go through a portal, the game searches for the closest active portal in the other dimension within a certain range. If it finds one that is closer than the 'correct' destination, it will link to that one instead. To fix this, you need to build a portal at the precise coordinates.

What is the minimum size for a Nether portal?

The minimum size for a Nether portal frame is 4 blocks wide by 5 blocks high, which requires 10 obsidian blocks. You can make the frame larger, up to a maximum of 23x23 blocks.

Can you build a Nether portal in the End?

No, Nether portals cannot be built or activated in the End dimension. Any attempt to build and light a portal frame in the End will not work.
